PURCHASING A PRE-1992 CARAVAN...

If you have purchased a touring caravan manufactured before 1992 or an imported touring caravan that has a 17 digit VIN marked on the windows it may already have been registered with CRiS by a previous keeper. When selling the caravan the registered keeper will need to notify CRiS by filling out the CVR7 (Notification of Sale or Transfer) section on the Registration Document with the new keepers details and post it to CRiS. It is important that the new keeper signs and dates the form as confirmation of the sale. Alternatively, the seller can advise CRiS of the sale by calling our customer service team on: 0203 282 1000.

To re-register the caravan in your name a fee of £19.95 is payable, you can register here or over the telephone on 0203 282 1000.

If you are looking at purchasing a pre-1992 or imported touring caravan that doesn’t appear to be registered with CRiS i.e the caravan does not have a VIN marked on the windows. You would need to register the caravan via the pre 1992/ Import registration process.

The fee for this is £59.99. This fee includes the registration of the caravan onto the CRiS database, a registration document in the registered keepers name and a VIN CHIP® upgrade kit worth £24.99.

As part of this process we send the documents to a third party who will carry out a number of checks to :

  • Confirm the caravan details provided match those held by the manufacturer

  • Identify any security alerts registered with the UK police and Interpol

  • Check if it has outstanding finance

  • Check if it has been written off by insurers

  • Check current CRiS records currently held against the caravan

The checks help protect you by ensuring, as far as we reasonably can, that the caravan is legitimate.
On successful completion of these checks we then create a 17 digit VIN if the caravan does not have one. The caravan is registered onto the CRiS database, anti counterfeit documents are ordered in the name of the registered keeper, VIN CHIP® upgrade kit is ordered from the manufacturer and sent.
